Après avoir imposé son nom à coup de singles efficaces, Seinabo Sey entre enfin dans la cours des grands avec Pretend. Un premier album studio sur lequel la jeune chanteuse suédoise par sa mère, gambienne par son père, montre rapidement l’étendue de son éventail vocal mais aussi stylistique. Un éclectisme au cœur même de Pretend. On passe ainsi d’une soul musclée à une pop groovy en un claquement de doigt ! En cela, Seinabo Sey reluque aussi bien le travail d’une Alicia Keys que d’une VV Brown, d’une Selah Sue que d’une Beyoncé. Elle apporte même, ça-et-là, quelques touches plus tribales avec des instants percussifs à souhait. Côté voix, le choc est total. Un grain vocal déjà bien identifiable et une souplesse à alterner entre ballades pures et titres plus up-tempo, Seinabo Sey n’est pas un feu de paille mais une vraie chanteuse là pour durer. © CM/Qobuz
