Produced by Kid Millions of Oneida, Company's third album is a bit self-consciously "alt-" in its alt-folk approach. The rough-edged live-in-the-studio vibe of Parallel Time is here softened into something fuzzier and just a touch more psychedelic (especially in touches like the fuzz guitar solo that ends "When the Morning Comes"), but it suits the band's twangy and low-key pop songs. Aside from the seven-minute epic "Down in the Goat House" (which features a lovely extended coda of overlapping guitar harmonics that sounds a bit like Sonic Youth gone country) these 11 songs are concise and direct, with all three of the band's singer-songwriters focusing on hooks and melodies more than atmosphere and attitude. This results in fine tracks as varied as the throbbing, noisy rocker "Shine" and the weepy country ballad "I Guess I'm Lonely." As always, Stephanie Rabins is under-utilized as a singer, a shame because she has the most appealing voice of the three, but overall, Old Baby is Company's most successful album so far.
