After Be Your Own Pet was founded by four high-school friends in 2004, they took off quickly, signing to Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label. Singer Jemina Pearl (who is no shrinking violet) found herself facing photographers who asked her to suck lollipops, "fans" who asked her to show her breasts, and reviewers who wrote "really sexist, awful things." Is it any wonder she threw in the towel after two albums and four years? Fifteen years later, the married mom-of-two is reclaiming her place at the front of the stage—and sounds every bit as fierce and explosive as she did as a teenager. "Big Trouble" kicks in with sirens and menacing frustration, careening from there. "When I was younger/ I would kick and scream ... They'd ask, 'Why so angry/ When you got such a pretty face?" Pearl sings. "Yes I'm still angry!" It is punk as ever as she spits out a full-on screed: "I want wages for housework/ I want childcare for free/ I want on-demand abortions/ I want full-body autonomy/ I want equal pay/ I want your equity/ And when I tell you, I want you to believe." "Worship the Whip"—which somehow combines the teasing '80s metal of Faster Pussycat with early Yeah Yeah Yeahs—is less straightforward, recasting right-wing fanaticism (oh hell, it's about Trumpers) as a masochistic tendency. "You live for punishment or so it seems/ Why don't you pull yourself from boot straps up?/ While hе pushes your face in the dirt," Pearl sings while Jonas Stein's guitar wails and rails. "Pleasure Seeker" is sexy and slithering, fizzing over like a soda loaded with Pop Rocks. "Rubberist"—about male expectations of femininity ("Hard candy in cellophane")—is a little new wave, a little funk and a little Paramore. "Drive" has an unexpected two-tone bounce. And Pearl gets extremely personal on bad-ass "Bad Mood Rising," which is about her bipolar disorder diagnosis and features Stein revving an actual drill to mimic the sound of a "lobotomy." "It's like I got two personalities/ One that hates you and one that hates me," Pearl sings. "Think I want to be this way?/ Like I have a choice/ It's this chemical imbalance." And "Goodtime!," a superfun, Runaways-esque slice of Rocky Horror Picture Show melodrama, is about her parental FOMO: "I don't want to be left behind/ When everyone else is having a goodtime goodtime goodtime goodtime" she wails. No need to worry; Pearl is the good time, even as she's paying her mortgage. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
