Depuis Inside In/Inside Out en 2006, les Kooks ont bercé un grand nombre d’adolescents rebelles. Douze ans plus tard, la bande de Luke Pritchard a bien grandi. Leur cinquième album est la première rupture avec leur image classique. Rock indé influencé par le folk, la pop et le punk bubble-gum, Let’s Go Sunshine ne suit pas le chemin du précédent Listen, mais cherche à en relever les contrastes. Sur ce disque, les Kooks effectuent une course contre le temps, poursuivis par la nostalgie, jouent sur le conflit entre énergie et fatigue et chantent toujours les relations humaines et l’intelligence émotionnelle. La tension monte titre après titre, gonflée par la guitare de Hugh Harris, la basse de Peter Denton et les rythmes engagés d’Alexis Nunez à la batterie. L’album est solide. Pas véritablement visionnaire mais entraînant et touchant. Initials for Gainsbourg, un bel appel à l’amour bien que légèrement surproduit, contraste comme il se doit avec le rock rebondissant de Pamela. Les Kooks n’oublient pas de lier le tout d’une ballade acoustique où les violons sont les bienvenus (Picture Frame) avant de terminer sur un son tout à fait chill où seul importe de passer du bon temps pendant l’été (No Pressure).
