Jangle pop never goes out of style, perhaps because its main signifiers (i.e., ringing guitars, yearning vocals, an earnest vibe) are also timeless. However, each new generation of jangle-pop bands puts its own spin on the genre. Take Ducks Ltd.: On the heels of a jubilant cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On" (featuring Illuminati Hotties' Sarah Tudzin), the Toronto indie duo—vocalist-rhythm guitarist Tom McGreevy and lead guitarist Evan Lewis—have released a sterling sophomore effort, Harm's Way, brimming with livewire energy and taut arrangements.
That vibrancy is explained by the fact Ducks Ltd. wrote this new batch of songs while on tour with bands like Archers of Loaf and Nation of Language, and then recorded the album in Chicago with touring drummer Jonathan Pappo and bassist Julia Wittman. However, producer Dave Vettraino (Dehd) and guests like members of Ratboys, Dummy, and Patio ensure Harm's Way possesses eclectic influences, including Go-Betweens' minimalist riffage ("Deleted Scenes"), urgent Britpop jubilance ("On Our Way To the Rave") and Postcard Records-esque '80s pop (the title track). The twee-kissed "Heavy Bag," meanwhile, closes the album with introspective string arrangements and cooing harmonies, both of which hint at intriguing future sonic directions. Fans of Ride, Trashcan Sinatras and Real Estate will find much to love about Harm's Way. © Annie Zaleski/Qobuz
