Authentique génie ou musicien simple d'esprit ? La question peut être posée mais la réponse arrive rapidement à l'écoute des dix-huit chansons formant la matière brute de décoffrage de Fun, publié en 1994.
Pianiste et guitariste atteint de troubles mentaux, Daniel Johnston tire de sa souffrance les principaux thèmes de ses chansons, majoritairement interprétées à la première personne, comme dans le « Crazy Love » (« I love that girl so much... »), ballade dépouillée servie avec le coeur. En d'autres occasions, le Texan d'adoption livre ses tripes (« Life in Vain », « Mind Contorted ») et quelques rares et troubles instants de bonheur (« Happy Time »), mais il fait toujours en sorte de les accompagner de mélodies naïves et lumineuses, comme en attestent des chansons amenées à devenir des classiques : « Love Wheel » et « Foxy Girl ». Car il ne faut pas oublier que le gars est l'auteur d'une des dix plus belles chansons de la décennie, « Love Will Find You in the End ».
L'album Fun a fait connaître le nom de Daniel Johnston au-delà du Texas et des initiés. Cela tombe bien car il s'agit là d'un, ou du chef d'oeuvre de ce fou chantant.
