Nommé pour le Mercury Prize et les Brit Awards dans la catégorie « révélation » en 2017, le quintet rétro-pop de Stockport s’est vu attribuer la lourde charge de porter les espoirs d’une pop indépendante en manque d’air face à l’impérieuse pop industrialisée. Blossoms s’est rapidement délesté de cette pression pour tracer sa voie hors des cadres, ricochant entre les récifs nostalgiques de Madchester et de la britpop, tout en se tenant à longueur de brasse de ses contemporains les plus inspirés, Temples et Tame Impala.
Son troisième opus, Foolish Loving Spaces, confirme pourtant le potentiel radiophonique du groupe qui offre ici un condensé - dix titres pour une petite demi-heure - de pop hymnique, dansante et foutraque, sans jamais rien concéder de son crédit glané auprès du public rock. Entre le gigotant et sexy « Your Girlfriend », l’entraînant « The Keeper », « My Swinging Brain » et sa disco veloutée, le funky « Sunday Was a Friend of Mine » ou encore le rêveur « My Vacant Days » qui laisse entrevoir un songwriting plus profond qu’on ne l’envisageait, Blossoms séduit par son épicurisme béat, coloré par touches subtiles d’une mélancolie latente.
Exception notable aux habituelles manœuvres commerciales grossières, l’édition deluxe de cet album réserve un joli bonus avec l’ensemble de ces titres réinterprétés dans une version acoustique qui révèle le potentiel mélodique de chacune des plages.
