Il fut comme une apparition. Brève donc. Mais une apparition dont l’ombre plane encore aujourd’hui toujours aussi majestueusement sur la musique actuelle. Trois albums et vingt-six années passées sur terre suffiront à Nick Drake pour chambouler la face du mouvement folk… Paru en septembre 1969 sur le label Island, ce premier album de Nick Drake embarque pourtant d’entrée de jeu le folk britannique vers des cieux de poésie et de mélancolie rarement atteints. Une scène folk pourtant aux côtés du jeune songwriter pour le soutenir dans cet enregistrement (Richard Thompson de Fairport Convention et Danny Thompson de Pentangle sont notamment là) porté par des cordes sublimes orchestrées par Robert Kirby. Est-ce encore du folk ? Du folk chambriste peut-être ? Qu’importe… Avec cet alliage onirique, Nick Drake impose son style mais pas encore son nom : les critiques d’alors, sans être négative, ne trouvent cette première copie qu’intéressante et sympathique.
