Tracy Chapman s’inscrit fermement dans la tradition des chanteurs-compositeurs classiques, son son semblant enregistré au début des années 70, à condition de n’écouter que l’aspect sonore de sa musique, car les chansons de Tracy sont clairement le résultat de la révolution reaganienne. Même les chansons d'amour et les lamentations sont soulignées par une vision concrète de la vie moderne : les paroles de "Fast Car" en sont la preuve. La musique de Tracy Chapman est habitée par son activisme véhément en faveur des défavorisés et la résonnance de ses émotions donne vie à ses chansons.
