Après « les aventures d’Eric Clapton en Amérique », l’ambitieux guitariste décide enfin de lancer en solo. Les Dominos au complet, le couple Bramlett et les deux « cuivres » du moment, Jim Price et Bobby Keys, répètent chez Clapton puis débutent l’enregistrement aux studios Olympic à Londres.
Cinq morceaux sont enregistrés en novembre 1969, qui ne seront pas publiés, sauf « Lovin’ You, Lovin’ Me » mais qui sera ré-enregistré en janvier 1970, avec les mêmes musiciens augmentés du pianiste Leon Russell, cette fois aux studios Village Recorders à Los Angeles pour l’album en entier produit par Delaney Bramlett, moité préparé, moitié improvisé. Habile mélange de Gospel et de Blues, il est remarquable par les propres co-compositions du guitariste et ses progrès en matière de chant (« Let It Rain » et « Blues Power » en particulier, celui-ci écrit par Delaney en songeant à Clapton). Le titre qui s’en détache est bien évidemment la reprise de « After Midnight » de JJ Cale, véritable « moule » de beaucoup de futures chansons d’Eric Clapton, qui croyait à l’époque que la principale occupation de JJ Cale était ingénieur du son, apprenti « songwriter » !.
Trois mixages de l’album ont été effectués. L’un par Delaney où la guitare est proéminente, un autre par Clapton lui-même à la suite d’un quiproquo, et un troisième à l’instigation d’Atlantic, réalisé par Tom Dowd et choisi.
