L’idée d’Ella Fitzgerald d’enregistrer les chansons des grands librettiste américains de Broadway prouve avec intelligence son intuition artistique. Quand, en 1960, elle enregistre les chansons d’Harold Arlen, elle a déjà gravé les répertoires de Duke Ellington, Rodgers & Hart et Irving Berlin. Ces arrangements, de goût et parfaitement détendus, présentent 24 des meilleurs chansons de ce compositeur. Des pièces moins fréquentées comme One for My Baby ou That Old Black Magic côtoient les grands classiques que sont Stormy Weather ou Over the Rainbow. Comme souvent dans l’enregistrement de ces désormais célèbres « song books », Ella réhabilite les verses, c’est-à-dire les parties introductives, rarement interprétées par les « singers » de standards. Les orchestrations de Billy May, à grand renfort de cordes et de cuivres, se moulent parfaitement dans des interprétations comme When the Sun Comes Out ou Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe. Cette version téléchargeable en qualité Studio Master présente l’enregistrement intégral tel qu’il fut présenté (un double vinyle) à l’origine mais sans les 4 bonus qu’on a pu trouver dans les éditions suivantes. La pochette est celle d’origine, un dessin d’Henri Matisse. Sings Harold Arlen Song Book est un excellent album, un classique du jazz vocal et l'un des meilleurs enregistrements d’Ella Fitzgerald.
