Après des escapades pop, bossa mais aussi orientées vers les années 20 et 30 durant lesquelles elle revisitait aussi bien Tom Jobim que Burt Bacharach, les Eagles ou 10CC, Diana Krall revient avec Turn Up The Quiet au jazz et à la tradition du Great American Songbook, retrouvant pour l’occasion son producteur fétiche, Tommy Lipuma, derrière certains de ses plus grands disques comme All For You, The Look Of Love et Live In Paris. « Cela faisait longtemps que je pensais à ces chansons, précise la Canadienne. Etre entourée de certains de mes meilleurs amis m’a permis de raconter ces histoires exactement comme je le souhaitais. Baisser la voix est parfois le meilleur moyen de se faire entendre… ». Tout est dit quant à la démarche de ce nouveau sommet de raffinement. Si Diana Krall est avant tout une pianiste de jazz, elle s’est transformée en véritable chef d’orchestre pour ce disque, choisissant elle-même la liste des chansons, composant les arrangements et formant trois groupes différents pour les sessions d’enregistrement. Dès l’ouverture en catimini de ce Turn Up The Quiet avec une relecture de Blue Skies pour laquelle elle est accompagnée du contrebassiste Christian McBride et du guitariste Russell Malone, le décor est planté. Epuré ; et allant droit au but. Un trio qu’on retrouve plus tard sur le Dream de Johnny Mercer mis en valeur par les arrangements d’Alan Broadbent. Sur certains morceaux, Diana Krall a fait le choix d’un quintet comprenant Karriem Riggins à la batterie et Tony Garnier à la basse, I’ll See You In My Dreams, bénéficiant par ailleurs de la participation du violoniste Stuart Duncan et Moonglow de celle du guitariste Marc Ribot. Réunissant le guitariste Anthony Wilson, le bassiste John Clayton Jr. et le batteur Jeff Hamilton, le troisième groupe s’illustre quant à lui par la qualité cinématographique de ses interprétations, particulièrement évidente sur une reprise envoutante de Sway… A l’arrivée, le Great American Songbook, filtré de la sorte par Diana Krall, sort comme magnifié.
