Le très prisé chantre de Laurel Canyon (Californie) installé désormais non loin à Topanga, revient avec le délicat Eat The Worm. Beaucoup de piano, de cuivres et de cordes, une batterie légère, un clavier et même un orgue et un vibraphone, mais finalement très peu de guitares, hormis Charlie Parker, Hey Love, B.F.F., et encore… Jonathan Wilson troque son chapeau de crooner sudiste, vissé profondément dans le chassé-croisé bluegrass/country Dixie Blur (2020) enregistré à Nashville, pour un costume plus intemporel, que le travail réalisé sur Chloé and The Next 20th Century (2022) pour son protégé Father John Misty, dans ses propres studios, semble avoir largement influencé.
Le songwriter ne reste jamais trop longtemps en terres conquises mais navigue constamment, défriche toujours, sans se préoccuper des directions ou des territoires. Ce huitième album passe ainsi sans complexe ni complexité du bizarroïde et expérimental Bonamossa aux lents ressacs bossa Wim Hof et au psyché-folk langoureux d’OI’ Father Time, en passant par les accélérations cinétiques quasi punk de l’exaltant The Village Is Dead. Tout semble possible et inattendu. Chaque morceau est un labyrinthe, un kaleïdoscope trippant, dans lequel on s’abandonne. Comment le Californien arrive à encore trouver du temps dans son agenda surchargé, entre une tournée avec Roger Waters ou ses collaborations, on se le demande.
