Aussi fascinante que déroutante, Annie Clark alias St. Vincent joue perpétuellement à cache-cache avec des valeurs, des sons et des influences comme déconnectées de leur temps. En 2013, sur son album St. Vincent, elle imbriquait par exemple un esprit à la Talking Heads dans des textures dignes de King Crimson, lorgnant aussi bien la new wave des 80's que David Bowie, l’artiste à qui elle ressemble sans doute le plus… Quatre ans plus tard, son cinquième album, Masseduction, était son disque le plus personnel, avec ses mots de l’intime, ses phrases sans maquillage. Des introspections qui ne l’empêchaient toutefois pas de déballer quelques parenthèses farfelues voire surréalistes pour être, à l’arrivée, son disque le plus… bowiesque !


Daddy’s Home enfonce le clou dans ce domaine en penchant vers la période Young Americans (1975) du Thin White Duke. Et côté vie privée, le titre Daddy’s Home, qui annonce le retour de papa à la maison, évoque son propre père, sorti de prison en 2019 après une lourde condamnation pour détournement de fonds… Le vrai choc est ici surtout esthétique et l’atmosphère générale de l’album décale clairement Clark des 80's vers les 70's, de la cold wave et la pop électronique vers le rock imbibé de soul voire de funk. Comme sur la chanson-titre qui semble être un inédit du There’s a Riot Goin’ de Sly And The Family Stone. Ou lorsqu’elle claque un vrai solo de guitar hero sur Live in the Dream, un thème grandiloquent baignant dans l’hédonisme à la Prince et le planant à la Pink Floyd (elle cite même Dark Side of the Moon sur The Melting of the Sun). Annie Clark ne cherche jamais le catchy, ni le tube à tout prix. Et ses compositions s’étirent, prennent leur temps et se prélassent dans cette langueur propre à cette décennie 70 qui la fascine tant, et nous aussi par la même occasion. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Nick Cave et ses Bad Seeds restent l’une des aventures les plus prolifiques de l’ère postpunk. Au crépuscule des 70’s, les éclaboussures punk n’ont pas encore séché que la noirceur du mouvement déteint déjà sur de nouveaux groupes. Dans cette new wave, le courant post-punk offre une approche tourmentée, voire radicale. Des précurseurs Joy Division et The Fall aux contemporains Shame et Fontaines D.C., coup de zoom sur les albums phares d’un électrochoc qui n’a jamais cessé de fasciner l’underground rock’n’roll.
