Cet excellent deuxième album creuse avec succès le même sillon que le premier, Asleep in the Back : de longs morceaux aux tempos lents, aux structures musicales relativement élaborées et aux arrangements dominés par les claviers, d'une grande richesse.
Le tout fait revivre une certaine idée du rock dit « progressif » cher aux années 1970. Comme de plus, la voix de Guy Garvey évoque tour à tour celles de Mark Hollis et de Peter Gabriel (« Fallen Angel »), on se retrouve à voyager dans des contrées sonores relativement originales pour l'époque.
Dès lors, il n'est pas étonnant qu'au cours d'une émission de la BBC, un musicien aussi libre et avant-gardiste que John Cale ait choisi le superbe « Switching Off » pour figurer parmi ses « huit chansons à emporter sur une île déserte ». On peut même carrément emporter l'album entier...
