Bien qu'elle soit associée à la nouvelle scène pop outre-Manche, la ménestrelle Florence Welch et sa machine (sobriquet regroupant ses instruments en studio et ses quatre musiciens sur scène) séduisent avec une hardiesse et une habileté qui rappellent celles de son ainée Kate Bush. A cet égard, « Between Two Lungs » fait penser à un « Hounds of Love » revisité un quart de siècle après sa sortie.
Cependant, cette ascendance ne suffit pas à expliquer le phénomène, l'onde que produit le passage de cette chanteuse à la voix puissante et virevoltante. En un an et une poignée de singles, Flo la navigatrice est passée du rock nerveux de « Kiss With a Fist », à la pop ludique et mélodique de « Dog Days Are Over », jouée sur un ukulélé. Regroupés sur ce premier album, ces titres et les autres, touchent et coulent, en quelques embardées, l'armada qui tenait la multi-instrumentiste dans son viseur.
Sirène, elle emprunte parfois les harpes et les voies d'un néo-psychédélisme à la Bat for Lashes (« Cosmic Love » et « Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) ) » pour mieux nous attirer dans ses filets de pirate contenant des trésors d'émotions, tel le blues électrique de « Girl With One Eye ». Tant et si bien qu'en suivant les remous et les rythmes, soutenus tout au long de l'album, on redoute le creux de la vague.
Mais en vérité Lungs, victorieux, tient le choc. Dans le fond et dans la forme, il s'agit de bout en bout, d'un album formidable. Une respiration salutaire au cœur d'une saison à l'actualité discographique parfois plombée par l'éphémère. Quant à la capitaine, elle a déjà conquis les spectateurs des festivals de Reading, Leeds et des Eurockeéennes de Belfort.
