Pianiste rattaché au répertoire romantique, le Francilien Laurent Cabasso est aussi connu pour son amour de Prokofiev qui en 2004 lui avait valu un Diapason d'or. Celui qui dit être fasciné par les Variations Diabelli de Beethoven depuis l'adolescence voit enfin son souhait matérialisé par cet enregistrement.

Et quel enregistrement ! Car il s'agit là d'une interprétation digne des plus grandes. Le corpus de trente-trois pièces composées vers 1823 d'après une Valse proposée par l'éditeur Anton Diabelli a connu des moments glorieux sous les mains de Claudio Arrau, Sviatoslav Richter, Alfred Brendel ou Maurizio Pollini. Que de grands noms auxquels a succédé plus récemment Piotr Anderszewski, en 2001. La version Cabasso de 2011, profondément mûrie et inspirée, peut désormais s'inscrire dans cette lignée.

Non seulement le pianiste professeur au CNSM de Paris respecte avec soin chaque détail de la partition, mais il insuffle ce sentiment de fraîcheur manquant à bien d'autres adaptations, et non des moindres (la version Kovacevich de 1968 et celle de Pascal Rogé utilisée dans Le Camion de Marguerite Duras paraissent en comparaison assez datées). De manière ambitieuse, le programme d'ores et déjà engageant est complété par la Fantaisie Wanderer de Schubert, éditée par Diabelli la même année, délivrée ici de manière impériale comme Alfred Brendel vingt ans auparavant.
