Disciples of Eno, Ultravox struggled in anonymity for several years before striking a modicum of success with their Vienna record in 1980. In just roughly a decade of initial activity, the group recorded eight proper albums, leaving behind a wealth of experimentation with synthesizers and rudimentary goth-tinged electronica. John Foxx's theatrical vocals and the band's sterilized robotic beats helped set the bar for future electro-pop to come. Stand-out tracks on this collection, like the wiry "Sleepwalk" and "Reap the Wild Wind" are prime examples of Ultravox's signature sound, and the group's range is shown on moody, sprawling numbers like "Vienna" and "Vision in Blue." As with many in the Essential series focusing on '80s bands, the collection loses steam by including later period singles or highlight tracks from weaker albums. "All Fall Down" and "All in One Day," from 1986's U-Vox album, are embarrassing shifts in direction from Ultravox's original sound, experimenting with Celtic touches and overblown acoustic bombast. Certainly a far cry from the group's earlier, dark electro musings and easily the most inessential inclusions on Essential.
