Et Nirvana tua le rock

Il y a trente-quatre ans naissait Nirvana, l’embardée punk la plus inattendue de la fin du XXe siècle. Carrière éclair, tubes éternels, engouement planétaire et épilogue tragique : et si la bande de Kurt Cobain n’était autre que le dernier grand groupe de l’histoire du rock ? Retour sur l’histoire d’un phénomène générationnel sans pareil.
Mais l’épuisement aura raison de Kurt Cobain qui, fatigué par le public et les médias, interrompt la tournée européenne alors en cours. Peu de temps après, il est retrouvé mort à son domicile, une balle dans la tête, le 8 avril 1994, sept mois après la sortie du troisième et ultime album studio, In Utero… Avec cette fin tragique, à seulement 27 ans, du Ian Curtis de la génération grunge s’arrête une carrière et commence une légende : la popularité de Nirvana n’a pas décru depuis, les morceaux demeurant des standards du genre. La tragédie a même renforcé le mythe autour de ce groupe adopté par toute une jeunesse. Le Washington Post titrera même : « Kurt Cobain, le suicide parlant à une génération. »
Le chômage est rayonnant, le sida élague à foison et le chanteur de Nirvana, au sommet de sa gloire, se tire une balle. Bref, le ciel est gris anthracite… Aujourd’hui, le rock indé est devenu plus mainstream que jamais. A l’aube des années 90, il ne l’était pas ! Personne ne rêvait de succès, de caser ses ritournelles dans des pubs télé et d’entasser les dollars au nom du rock’n’roll. En un claquement de doigts, Nirvana est passé d’un petit label de potes (Sub Pop) à l'une des plus grosses majors (Geffen), du Fahrenheit d'Issy-les-Moulineaux au Zénith de Paris, et du fanzine de base à la Une du mensuel Rolling Stone ! En 1991, Kurt Cobain manipulait alors avec précaution ses propos sur la fulgurance du succès de son groupe : « Ce n'est pas notre but de continuer à vendre des disques. On veut juste continuer à s’amuser et à s’apprécier les uns les autres. On espère pouvoir encore écrire de la bonne musique avant que ça nous tape sur les nerfs. Si le moindre truc menace cet équilibre, on arrête immédiatement. On peut également arrêter le groupe un certain temps, une option heureusement envisageable… Mais on ne s’attendait à ce que ce succès soit aussi massif et aussi immédiat. Il faudrait vraiment que je sois très prétentieux pour vous dire que je prévoyais ça… Dans le bureau de notre avocat, j’avais vu accroché au mur un disque d'or du groupe de hard rock Poison et je m’étais dit : “Il n'y a absolument, mais alors absolument aucune chance, et aucune raison, qu'un groupe comme le nôtre puisse avoir du succès dans le mainstream.” Aujourd’hui, je ne suis pas effrayé par ce succès. C'est juste que… j'ai peur qu’il puisse faire en sorte que toute cette entreprise ne soit plus drôle. Que ça devienne impersonnel. En ce moment, on prend encore du plaisir. Mais qui sait ? »
L’icône Kurt Cobain n’est plus depuis plus de vingt ans. Serait-il devenu « un vieux songwriter incrusté dans un rocking-chair, guitare acoustique en main », comme il aimait s’imaginer à l’heure de la retraite ?. Dans la peau d’un Leadbelly. Ou d’un Johnny Cash, l’auteur de Don't Take Your Guns to Town. Qui sait… Il y a eu des centaines de nouveaux groupes de rock après Nirvana. Aucun pourtant n'a atteint une telle reconnaissance, un tel statut. Car au milieu des années 90, la sensation de rébellion et toute la mythologie qu’elle véhicule se déportent du rock’n’roll – devenu plus consensuel que jamais – vers d’autres genres musicaux comme le hip-hop ou l’électro. Une (r)évolution que n’aurait jamais imaginée Kurt Cobain…
