Deux voix pour n’en faire qu’une. Celle de (la trompette de) Miles Davis. Celle de Cassandra Wilson. Avec ce bien nommé Traveling Miles qu’elle publie chez Blue Note en 1999, la chanteuse du Mississippi revisite le répertoire du trompettiste où les thèmes qu’il a souvent joués. Son organe splendide et grave s’abandonne avec la même retenue, la même épure que celles auquel elle rend hommage. Le saxophoniste Steve Coleman, le guitariste Pat Metheny, la chanteuse Angélique Kidjo, le percussionniste Mino Cinelu et quelques autres sont à ses côtés pour rendre cet hommage encore plus intense. Là où Cassandra Wilson impressionne le plus restant dans sa capacité à s’approprier des compositions maintes fois enregistrées et entendues, compositions qu’elle fait siennes.
