Avec ce troisième album du Velvet, Lou Reed est enfin l’unique maître à bord. Exit John Cale donc, le Lou fait même de ce superbe opus une sorte de rampe de lancement de sa carrière solo. Oubliez le tsunami d’électricité de White Light/White Heat, ce sont les ballades comme Candy Says et Pale Blue Eyes qui irradient ce disque à la production on ne peut plus épurée pour ne pas dire squelettique… Evidemment, Lou Reed est un rock’n’roll animal comme le rappellent What Goes On et Beginning To See The Light et il aime aussi à rappeler que l’avant-garde est une de ses marottes comme le prouve l’expérimental The Murder Mystery… Pirouette finale de ce chef d’œuvre, sa cultissime et naïve ballade After Hours chantée par la batteuse Moe Tucker. © MZ/Qobuz
