L’album d’un triomphe, qui fit plaisir à à peu près tout le monde : ceux qui voyaient dans ce succès – enfin – la reconnaissance des incontestables talents de chanteur et compositeur de Youssou N’Dour. Ceux qui aimaient les jolies chansons d’amour, et les rythmes délicatement syncopés. Et ceux qui ne rechignaient pas à ce triomphe, tout aussi inattendu que mondial, d’un artiste africain.
Naturellement, la vérité s’avère plus nuancée : Guide (Wommat) est un album trop produit, trop empreint de clins d’yeux appuyés à destination du marché occidental, trop marqué par l’anglais et le français, et trop sous influences (paradoxalement, des tambours hérités des townships sud-africains, qu’on avait pu découvrir chez Paul Simon).
Ceci posé, toutes (toutes) les chansons en sont excellentes, quelques-unes exceptionnelles (« Seven Seconds » en duo avec Neneh Cherry, bien sûr, aujourd’hui aussi soyeuse qu’hier, et une reprise impeccable du « Chimes of Freedom » de Bob Dylan), et les invités à inscrire au patrimoine mondial de l’humanité : l’aventureux Glenn Ferris vient souffler dans son trombone, Lokua Kanza se glisser dans les chœurs, et Branford Marsalis brandir son saxophone doré.
Tous aspects qui démontrent que N’Dour vise à ce que sa musique soit entendue par le plus grand nombre, ce qu’on peut difficilement lui reprocher. Guide (Wommat) tutoiera les sommets des charts américains de musique du monde. Quant à « Seven Seconds », le single intègrera fort logiquement le Top 100 des classements de vente.
