La première exploration approfondie sur les trésors du Eton Choirbook, sous la houlette de Grayston Burgess, qui n’était jamais sortie en CD, est ici remasterisée numériquement en une compilation qui réunit les deux albums du label Argo sortis en 1968 (Davy/Passion & Eton Choir Book, disque 2).
Copié entre 1490 et 1502, le Eton Choirbook est la source la plus importante de polyphonie liturgique anglaise de la fin du XVe et du tout début du XVIe siècle. L'historien de l'architecture Nicholas Pevsner a décrit le style perpendiculaire typiquement anglais — dit "gothique perpendiculaire" pour sa prédilection pour les lignes verticales, représenté par des bâtiments tels que les chapelles d'Eton et du King's College de Cambridge —, comme étant l’"union d’un esprit pratique et du sens du mystère où se glisse une effusion d'ornements presque orientale". Ce que nous contemplons dans ces bâtiments, nous pouvons l'entendre reflété par la musique du Eton Choirbook.
À partir des années 1920, on a voulu interpréter et enregistrer des pièces du Eton Choirbook, mais ces tentatives ont été freinées à la fois par les exigences techniques de la musique — souvent aussi passionnantes que complexes sur le plan rythmique, et instables métriquement — et par la relative méconnaissance des chœurs des cathédrales anglaises. Ce n'est qu'en 1968 qu'Argo s’est lancé avec succès dans l’enregistrement d’une sélection de ce recueil. Les interprètes constituaient une combinaison astucieuse : celle d'une fondation chorale entièrement masculine (les choristes de St Margaret Street à Londres) avec l'ensemble professionnel du Purcell Consort of Voices dirigé par leur fondateur Grayston Burgess, décédé en 2019.
Pour conclure cet album double, l’éditeur a ajouté l’enregistrement du Purcell Consort of Voices consacré à Josquin, qui avait été publié en 1971 en vinyle mais jamais encore en CD. La fluidité du style polyphonique de John Dunstable et la portée sublime de Josquin des Prez sont à l’œuvre dans ces pièces sacrées et profanes, instrumentales et vocales, avec pour points culminants l’élégance courtoise de l’O Rosa Rosa et l’hommage de l'élève à son professeur dans la Déploration sur la Mort de Okeghem.
