Dans la chronologie des multiples métamorphoses de Dylan, l’année 1978 est (plus ou moins) celle où il a vu la Vierge. Il sort l’album studio Street Legal, très influencé par le gospel, et confirmera l’année suivante sa conversion au christianisme avec l’album Slow Train Coming. Le live au Budokan Hall de Tokyo se situe à l’aube de cette ère chrétienne, loin du folk des débuts et des transgressions et grands-messes folk-rock de la suite. Pour ses premiers passages au Japon, Dylan est accompagné par le groupe qui joue sur Street Legal, et il joue son ancien répertoire à cette sauce cocktail. Les chœurs qui doublent sa voix, l’orgue omniprésent et les saillies de saxophone emmènent les chansons vers une sorte de muzak efficace, le genre de variété américaine qu’on entend dans les casinos de Vegas ou les fêtes de mariage.

Ce n’est pas une moquerie : Dylan est un chanteur populaire, dont un paquet de chansons semble faire partie du paysage. Dylan assume leur qualité universelle, bien supérieure aux contingences d’arrangements ou de style. Mais c’est surtout l’influence du gospel qui se fait déjà entendre. Une musique simple et puissante, qui donne de l’énergie et le sourire, à écouter ensemble. Certaines de ces chansons sont d’inoxydables classiques, que le public de Dylan connaît par cœur. Ici, il aura en plus envie de taper dans ces mains. Cette réédition de l’album de 1979 est augmentée de 36 titres, avec un son nettoyé et boosté. C’est beaucoup, mais qu’on soit fan hardcore de Dylan ou simplement séduit par ses chansons, qu’on soit Japonais ou pas du tout, ce live reste un moment intéressant de musique feel good. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

Dans la chronologie des multiples métamorphoses de Dylan, l’année 1978 est (plus ou moins) celle où il a vu la Vierge. Il sort l’album studio Street Legal, très influencé par le gospel, et confirmera l’année suivante sa conversion au christianisme avec l’album Slow Train Coming. Le live au Budokan Hall de Tokyo se situe à l’aube de cette ère chrétienne, loin du folk des débuts et des transgressions et grands-messes folk-rock de la suite. Pour ses premiers passages au Japon, Dylan est accompagné par le groupe qui joue sur Street Legal, et il joue son ancien répertoire à cette sauce cocktail. Les chœurs qui doublent sa voix, l’orgue omniprésent et les saillies de saxophone emmènent les chansons vers une sorte de muzak efficace, le genre de variété américaine qu’on entend dans les casinos de Vegas ou les fêtes de mariage.

Ce n’est pas une moquerie : Dylan est un chanteur populaire, dont un paquet de chansons semble faire partie du paysage. Dylan assume leur qualité universelle, bien supérieure aux contingences d’arrangements ou de style. Mais c’est surtout l’influence du gospel qui se fait déjà entendre. Une musique simple et puissante, qui donne de l’énergie et le sourire, à écouter ensemble. Certaines de ces chansons sont d’inoxydables classiques, que le public de Dylan connaît par cœur. Ici, il aura en plus envie de taper dans ces mains. Cette réédition de l’album de 1979 est augmentée de 36 titres, avec un son nettoyé et boosté. C’est beaucoup, mais qu’on soit fan hardcore de Dylan ou simplement séduit par ses chansons, qu’on soit Japonais ou pas du tout, ce live reste un moment intéressant de musique feel good. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
