Pour tous les amoureux de country, 1973 laissa une cicatrice indélébile avec la mort de Gram Parsons. Emmylou Harris perdit alors un ami, un mentor, un modèle d’inspiration et la personne qui partageait son quotidien. Douze ans plus tard, elle signe un album phare de sa carrière, l’un de ses préférés, The Ballad of Sally Rose, aujourd’hui réédité dans une édition spéciale de deux disques dont l’un comprenant dix démos. Parmi elles, une version mythique de The Sweetheart of the Rodeo ou encore White Line. Cet album est d’autant plus surprenant qu’il est l’un des rares entièrement écrits ou coécrits par Emmylou. Sally Rose, c’est elle ! Ou plutôt son nom de scène pour ses tournées. L’inspiration majeure demeure clairement sa relation avec Gram Parsons. On se promène alors entre les souvenirs fictifs et réels, les amours de scène et bien évidemment ce goût si prononcé pour la musique américaine. Avec Sur Diamond in My Crown ou Heart to Heart, des apogées de la ballade, on reconnait sa voix angélique, son talent pour combiner lyrisme et guitare acoustique. A se demander si elle ne parvient pas à communiquer avec l’au-delà. Et voilà que le rythme vous rattrape, une country plus rock vient à son tour et cela sans grand étonnement. Sur Rhythm Guitar, elle est accompagnée par Waylon Jennings à la guitare ou encore par les fidèles Dolly Parton et Linda Ronstadt pour les chœurs. On sent là une ambiance un peu plus 80's. Et l’aisance avec laquelle Emmylou Harris sait plonger dans un chant intense et profond pour faire surface avec de belles basses sur une country assumée donne envie de porter des boots à un concert du Grand Ole Opry. © Clara Bismuth/Qobuz
