Retour aux sources pour Sturgill Simpson après un album fleurant bon le ZZ Top période Eliminator (Sound & Fury) (1983) et une poignée d’enregistrements bluegrass (les deux volumes de Cuttin' Grass). Avec The Ballad of Dood & Juanita, le songwriter du Kentucky fait dans la country vintage pure et dure. Celle des Waylon & Willie qu’il vénère tant et qui illuminait son Metamodern Sounds in Country Music de 2014. Point de départ de cette cuvée 2021, l’appel de la narration. « Je voulais juste écrire une histoire, pas une collection de chansons qui racontent une histoire, mais une histoire réelle, d'un bout à l'autre… Cet album est un voyage en montagnes russes à travers tous les styles de country traditionnelle, bluegrass et mountain music que j'aime, y compris le gospel et l’a capella. C'est une simple histoire de rédemption ou de vengeance. » Vraiment tous les styles ! Et plutôt même impeccablement interprétés. Comme toujours avec Sturgill Simpson, le mimétisme avec la voix de Waylon Jennings est troublant. Intonation, timbre, prononciation, la star de la country outlaw semble ressuscitée à chaque coin de mélodie. Et tant qu’à rester en terre outlaw, Simpson s’offre sur la chanson Juanita, le guest ultime, l’expert n°1 du concept-album country : Willie Nelson !
