Miles Davis l’avait publiquement traité de fou. Leonard Bernstein le trouvait pour sa part absolument génial. Rares furent ceux qui n’avaient pas une opinion tranchée sur le cas Ornette Coleman. Sorte de hors-la-loi préférant jouer ses propres compositions que les standards de jazz, le saxophoniste américain développa également l’harmolodie, théorie unissant harmonie et mélodie. Coleman restera comme un défricheur, un empêcheur de tourner en rond qui influencera des légions de musiciens ; et en agacera aussi un certain nombre... Ce coffret de dix disques compile l’une des périodes les plus importantes de leur auteur. Entre 1959 et 1961, il a publié six albums studio pour le label Atlantic. Six albums présents ici et agrémentés de prises alternatives et de bonus divers, tout cela évidemment impeccablement remastérisé par John Webber. A travers les opus The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959), Change of the Century (1959), This Is Our Music (1960), Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation (1960), Ornette! (1961) et Ornette on Tenor (1961), et les compilations The Art of Improvisers (1970), Twins (1971), To Whom Who Keeps a Record (1975) et The Ornette Coleman Legacy (1993), on découvre l’art protéiforme d’un musicien ne cessant de se remettre en question. Miles Davis l’avait publiquement traité de fou. Leonard Bernstein le trouvait pour sa part absolument génial. Rares furent ceux qui n’avaient pas une opinion tranchée sur le cas Ornette Coleman. Sorte de hors-la-loi préférant jouer ses propres compositions que les standards de jazz, le saxophoniste américain développa également l’harmolodie, théorie unissant harmonie et mélodie. Coleman restera comme un défricheur, un empêcheur de tourner en rond qui influencera des légions de musiciens ; et en agacera aussi un certain nombre... Ce coffret de dix disques compile l’une des périodes les plus importantes de leur auteur. Entre 1959 et 1961, il a publié six albums studio pour le label Atlantic. Six albums présents ici et agrémentés de prises alternatives et de bonus divers, tout cela évidemment impeccablement remastérisé par John Webber. A travers les opus The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959), Change of the Century (1959), This Is Our Music (1960), Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation (1960), Ornette! (1961) et Ornette on Tenor (1961), et les compilations The Art of Improvisers (1970), Twins (1971), To Whom Who Keeps a Record (1975) et The Ornette Coleman Legacy (1993), on découvre l’art protéiforme d’un musicien ne cessant de se remettre en question.
