Cinquième album de Lil Wayne, Tha Carter II fait suite au premier chapitre de la série, en 2005, et se trouve être le premier album estampillé Cash Money Records qui ne comporte aucun instrumental signé du producteur maison Mannie Fresh. N°1 des charts rap, n°2 des charts généraux, cet album marque le véritable cross over de cet artiste purement gangsta, qui, en vendant plus de deux millions de copies de ce disque, devient effectivement « grand public ».
Le premier single, « Fireman », précède « Grown Man », « Hustler Musik » et « Shooter », qui tous quatre sont favoris des radios US. Plus varié que ses travaux précédents, en raison de la multiplicité des producteurs (dont la plupart sont peu connus), Tha Carter II invite peu de partenaires en featuring : on note cependant la présence de Kurupt (Tha Dogg Pound), de Birdman (non d’artiste de Bryan « Baby » Williams, fondateur de Cash Money) et de Robin Thicke (chanteur R&B). Les rappeurs sont en général très productifs, et Lil Wayne a certes commencé très jeune à s’exprimer, mais c’est avec cet album-ci qu’il montre une vraie maturité, acquise à travers sa déjà longue expérience.
