Présenté comme le musical le plus onéreux de l’histoire de Broadway, entaché par un retard à l’allumage certain (un nombre incalculable de répétitions), le départ précipité de plusieurs comédiens initialement intégrés dans le casting original, le limogeage de la directrice artistique du projet Julie Taymore, et des accidents affectant plusieurs membres de l’équipe, ce que The Edge considère comme un mélange audacieux de rock et d’opéra, articulé autour de quelques fondamentaux inhérents à la tradition musicale new-yorkaise, s’est donc vu infliger la sanction sans appel de critiques bilieux, fustigeant la prétention de l’entreprise, et le flop de l’épique qu’il incarne.
Et la musique, dans tout cela ? Et bien, nous mettrons lâchement nos pas dans ceux de la presse américaine, évaluant les chansons produites par Steve Lillywhite (quatorze au total, ouverture incluse) comme particulièrement ennuyeuses, voire harassantes. Outre quelques maladroits recyclages (« Boy Falls from the Sky », premier titre de la sélection mis en avant par les radios, ne constitue qu’un troublant décalque de « Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me », chanson de U2 jadis utilisée pour glorifier les très riches heures de...Batman), l’ensemble des refrains résonne de la manière la plus emphatique et artificielle qui soit.
On ne déniera pas à Reeve Carney – endosseur du rôle-titre – l’allant coutumier à ce genre d’entreprise, mais les mélodies convenues, les arrangements survitaminés et proches du pire hard FM, et les interprétations expressionnistes d’une équipe manifestement peu au fait des innovations en la matière, ne pourront décidément séduire que les auditeurs conquis d’avance.
Dans une atmosphère globale d’inachevé (où sont les chansons dignes de ce nom ?), Bono et The Edge campent avec l’assurance d’enfants perdus au mitan des décombres d’un rêve inassouvi peut-être, mais d’une entreprise vouée à l’échec assurément.

Chronique
Présenté comme le musical le plus onéreux de l’histoire de Broadway, entaché par un retard à l’allumage certain (un nombre incalculable de répétitions), le départ précipité de plusieurs comédiens initialement intégrés dans le casting original, le limogeage de la directrice artistique du projet Julie Taymore, et des accidents affectant plusieurs membres de l’équipe, ce que The Edge considère comme un mélange audacieux de rock et d’opéra, articulé autour de quelques fondamentaux inhérents à la tradition musicale new-yorkaise, s’est donc vu infliger la sanction sans appel de critiques bilieux, fustigeant la prétention de l’entreprise, et le flop de l’épique qu’il incarne.
Et la musique, dans tout cela ? Et bien, nous mettrons lâchement nos pas dans ceux de la presse américaine, évaluant les chansons produites par Steve Lillywhite (quatorze au total, ouverture incluse) comme particulièrement ennuyeuses, voire harassantes. Outre quelques maladroits recyclages (« Boy Falls from the Sky », premier titre de la sélection mis en avant par les radios, ne constitue qu’un troublant décalque de « Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me », chanson de U2 jadis utilisée pour glorifier les très riches heures de...Batman), l’ensemble des refrains résonne de la manière la plus emphatique et artificielle qui soit.
On ne déniera pas à Reeve Carney – endosseur du rôle-titre – l’allant coutumier à ce genre d’entreprise, mais les mélodies convenues, les arrangements survitaminés et proches du pire hard FM, et les interprétations expressionnistes d’une équipe manifestement peu au fait des innovations en la matière, ne pourront décidément séduire que les auditeurs conquis d’avance.
Dans une atmosphère globale d’inachevé (où sont les chansons dignes de ce nom ?), Bono et The Edge campent avec l’assurance d’enfants perdus au mitan des décombres d’un rêve inassouvi peut-être, mais d’une entreprise vouée à l’échec assurément.
