Il a fallu six ans à Sam Hunt pour publier la suite de son tubesque premier album Montevallo, mais les chansons ici sont pourtant terriblement familières : Body Like a Back Road plafonnait en haut des charts en 2017, Downtown's Dead en fit tout autant en 2018 et Kinfolks a grimpé à la première place en 2019. Southside est donc une sorte de greatest hits, ce qui permet d’écouter Drinkin' Too Much – des excuses à sa femme pour son mauvais comportement, en 2017 avant son mariage – avec le recul de 2020. En 2019, Hunt a été arrêté pour conduite en état d’ivresse, ce qui met en lumière les paroles « And I was the one on stage, drunk / Barely holdin' on » sur ABC. Hunt se met encore plus à nu sur le titre d’ouverture 2016, abandonnant sa signature infusée au hip-hop pour une ballade classique pleine de regrets.
