Afin de pleinement rassasier les fans de certains films cultes mis en musique par le compositeur japonais Joe Hisaishi, cette compilation XXL comprend des extraits de BO de certains longs métrages déjà présents dans un premier volume sorti en 2020 (Dream Songs). Ainsi, le thème de Kids Return est proposé ici dans une version live à la formation plus fournie que dans le précédent opus, et la musique de Kikujiro est représentée entre autres par le thème principal interprété au marimba (Summer). Outre ces deux classiques signés Takeshi Kitano, l’auditeur se régalera de la mélodie entêtante de Porco Rosso, dessin animé mythique de Miyazaki – avec une deuxième partie jazzy faisant écho aux années folles, lesquelles servent de cadre au film. Une compilation aussi riche a également le mérite de révéler toute la protéiformité du talent de Hisaishi, capable de composer à la fois un tango ébouriffant à la Astor Piazzolla (Tango X.T.C.), une musique minimaliste façon Steve Reich (DA-MA-SHI-E) ou encore une pièce concertante au néo-romantisme vibrant (View of Silence). Le présent album met aussi l’accent sur un certain nombre de morceaux présents dans le projet Piano Stories – une collection de disques du Maestro, lancée en 1988 : citons la gravité du Nocturne ou bien le tendre et mystérieux Lost Sheep on the Bed.
