In his last year, pianist Wilhelm Kempff named Gerhard Oppitz as the artist most likely to carry forward the tradition of which he felt himself to be a part. More than three decades later, this assessment still looks good. Oppitz has recorded some of these Schumann pieces before, but this 2023 release may be taken as definitive of his thinking on the subject. One attractive feature is the presence of Schumann's Grand Sonata No. 3 for piano, Op. 14, whose general infrequency in the concert repertory is hard to explain. Perhaps it is the presence of the slow movement by Clara Schumann, but with everything that has been emerging about the importance of the creative interaction between Robert and Clara, this would seem a point in the sonata's favor. In the shorter piano works, the Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6, and the Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Op. 26, Oppitz is seemingly straightforward, and it may take the listener a few hearings to realize the ways in which they have been drawn into Oppitz's world. Best of all is the Humoreske, Op. 20, where Oppitz is one of the few pianists to make this long, seemingly diffuse work hang together; he does so, moreover, while offering a reading that is several minutes slower than average. Add in excellent, idiomatic sound from the Irenensaal Baierbrunn, and one has a recording to treasure and revisit often from one of the great pianists of the day.
