En novembre 2022, Dolly Parton était intronisée au Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, cette institution qui récompense chaque année les artistes les plus influents de la musique populaire américaine. Dolly Parton était flattée, mais elle a admis elle-même qu’il y avait un problème : alors qu’elle a traversé toutes les décennies de rock depuis ses débuts (à elle et au rock), elle n’en a jamais chanté. Country star incontestée et personnage bigger than life, adulée par des générations de fans bien au-delà de son genre de prédilection, oui. Mais chanter du rock, non, jamais. Dolly Parton étant une femme pragmatique, ambitieuse, énergique et toujours jeune (elle ne fait pas du tout ses 77 ans), elle a décidé de s’y mettre. Et d’y mettre les moyens. Sur son premier album officiellement rock, Dolly accueille quelques invités : Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr, Elton John, Debbie Harry, Miley Cirus, Sting, Kid Rock, Emmylou Harris, John Fogerty, Joan Jett et un paquet d’autres. Pour faire quoi ?
Trente chansons, dont une vingtaine de reprises qui vont de Purple Rain de Prince au Satisfaction des Stones, en passant par Let It Be, We Are the Champions, Stairway To Heaven, Heart of Glass et un paquet d’autres. Il ne manque qu’Elvis, dont Dolly Parton fut à une époque une sorte d’équivalent féminin et country. Pas grave : elle écrit une chanson sur Elvis, et monte un duo avec un comédien-chanteur imitateur d’Elvis pour chanter. Ça s’est toujours passé comme ça avec Dolly : dans la démesure, au-delà des notions de bon goût. A l’écoute, l’album a autant de qualités que de défauts. Il est trop long, il ne fait pas toujours dans la dentelle, il est taillé pour les stades (ou les cérémonies genre intronisation au Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame), mais Dolly Parton semble vraiment s’amuser, et sa voix reste une merveille que le monde du rock peut envier. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

En novembre 2022, Dolly Parton était intronisée au Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, cette institution qui récompense chaque année les artistes les plus influents de la musique populaire américaine. Dolly Parton était flattée, mais elle a admis elle-même qu’il y avait un problème : alors qu’elle a traversé toutes les décennies de rock depuis ses débuts (à elle et au rock), elle n’en a jamais chanté. Country star incontestée et personnage bigger than life, adulée par des générations de fans bien au-delà de son genre de prédilection, oui. Mais chanter du rock, non, jamais. Dolly Parton étant une femme pragmatique, ambitieuse, énergique et toujours jeune (elle ne fait pas du tout ses 77 ans), elle a décidé de s’y mettre. Et d’y mettre les moyens. Sur son premier album officiellement rock, Dolly accueille quelques invités : Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr, Elton John, Debbie Harry, Miley Cirus, Sting, Kid Rock, Emmylou Harris, John Fogerty, Joan Jett et un paquet d’autres. Pour faire quoi ?
Trente chansons, dont une vingtaine de reprises qui vont de Purple Rain de Prince au Satisfaction des Stones, en passant par Let It Be, We Are the Champions, Stairway To Heaven, Heart of Glass et un paquet d’autres. Il ne manque qu’Elvis, dont Dolly Parton fut à une époque une sorte d’équivalent féminin et country. Pas grave : elle écrit une chanson sur Elvis, et monte un duo avec un comédien-chanteur imitateur d’Elvis pour chanter. Ça s’est toujours passé comme ça avec Dolly : dans la démesure, au-delà des notions de bon goût. A l’écoute, l’album a autant de qualités que de défauts. Il est trop long, il ne fait pas toujours dans la dentelle, il est taillé pour les stades (ou les cérémonies genre intronisation au Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame), mais Dolly Parton semble vraiment s’amuser, et sa voix reste une merveille que le monde du rock peut envier. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
