Entre 2014 et 2018, Migos a tout ravagé sur son passage. Les deux tiers du groupe majeur d’Atlanta s’unissent désormais pour un album qui sort des sentiers battus, eux qui avaient parfois tendance à ressasser un peu trop la recette trap. Pas de cela ici. Only Built for Infinity Links part dans des directions parfois opposées et montre que Quavo et Takeoff sont aussi à l’aise sur des beats inattendus. Bien sûr, l’artillerie trap est bien présente, à l’image des titres Messy (et cette prod en reverse de DJ Durel) ou du featuring avec le père spirituel Gucci Mane sur Us vs. Them. Mais lorsqu’ils décident de s’aventurer hors de leur domaine de prédilection, les deux rappeurs savent également tabasser l’auditeur. Il y a ces odes mélodiques très maîtrisées comme To the Bone avec NBA YoungBoy ou l’excellent Chocolate, en featuring avec les inévitables Young Thug et Gunna, et sur lequel DJ Durel, encore lui, fait parler la poudre. Les deux compères de toujours savent manœuvrer dans les ténèbres pour mieux atteindre la lumière, peuvent passer d’un morceau noir à la Not Out pour atterrir sur le savoureux Mixy, en trio avec la chanteuse Summer Walker. Quavo et Takeoff offrent peut-être leur long format le plus labyrinthique, sans se perdre pour autant, sans faire offense à leur statut de monstres sacrés de la trap.
