En 2017, Gregory Porter signait un album hommage pour ne pas dire une lettre d’amour à celui qu’il considère comme son héros ultime : Nat King Cole. Musicien singulier ayant slalomé entre le jazz pur et l’easy listening, pianiste virtuose, novateur et d’une grande finesse et, évidemment, fascinant chanteur/crooner doté d’une voix de velours, profonde et romantique, reconnaissable entre toutes, ce génie avait rarement été célébré avec autant de goût. Pour ce live londonien enregistré sur la prestigieuse scène du Royal Albert Hall, Gregory Porter est épaulé par son fidèle quartet (le pianiste Chip Crawford, le bassiste Jahmal Nichols, le batteur Emanuel Harrold et le saxophoniste Tivon Pennicott) mais surtout les 70 musiciens du London Studio Orchestra dirigés par Vince Mendoza. Il mêle ici des œuvres indissociables de Nat King Cole (Mona Lisa, Nature Boy…) mais aussi quelques compositions personnelles ( Hey Laura, When Love Was King, Don’t Lose Your Steam…). Fascinant tout au long de ce One Night Only de voir comment le chant de Gregory Porter est aussi à l’aise dans la sophistication folle des cordes que dans des séquences plus brutes et groovy.
