Cabaret Voltaire co-instigator Richard H. Kirk stages a neo-electro update of the percolating blood-and-sweat funk and politically charged Yoruba rhythms of such Afrobeat agitators as Fela Kuti. ONE MILLION AND THREE weighs electronic music's debt to African tribal drumbeats, as Kirk fingers the beginning of the digital age in the ancient Egyptian number crunching of al jabr--algebra.

Afro-electro synths, Fourth World samples, tranced-out, hard-wired electronica, and such titles as "Africa Must Be Free (By 2003)" combine in Kirk's ultimate "free your mind..." statement. Though based in the fundamentals of funk, ONE MILLION AND THREE represents its creator's genuinely global worldview. Urban, sub-Equatorial, Eastern, and island echoes infiltrate Kirk's future-funk "Kaleidoscope," and animal calls, machine noises, and voices can also be heard in the churning mix. MILLION catches this island Earth grooving to a common, perpetual beat.
