Bass-baritone Federico De Michelis (the capitalization is his own) has appeared in operatic and concert repertory from Mozart to Puccini, but for his debut album, he chooses something different, and he makes a fortunate choice. Mi País: Songs of Argentina offers pieces by some of Astor Piazzolla's predecessors, with one piece by Piazzolla himself, the fairly unusual Siempre se vuelve a Buenos Aires. De Michelis says that the songs "come directly out of my soul," so presumably, they are familiar to Argentines, and one or two, like Carlos Gardel's El día que me quieras, with its delectable spoken interlude, may be known to outsiders, but much of the music will be new to international listeners. Like so much other Latin American song, it falls along the boundary between classical and popular. The songs by Carlos Guastavino show that, although Piazzolla pushed the fusion of classical music and tango to a new extreme, he was far from the first to write tango-influenced songs. De Michelis is a persuasive interpreter of this material; his voice has a bit of what Piazzolla called "mud," and it is totally appropriate to this repertory. He is ably backed by pianist Steven Blier (it is interesting that he has also performed some of this material with a different pianist specifically identified as a tango player, showing how porous the classical/popular boundary is here), along with an occasional bandoneón player, violinist, and double bassist. The album has some of the flavor of Placído Domingo's recordings of semi-popular Spanish song, and it is highly satisfying even for those with no particular interest in Argentine music.
