Judged on its clarity of detail and faithfulness to the score, this recording of Mahler's majestic Symphony No. 8 ranks as one of the most exacting and authoritative ever made. Yet there are less tangible aspects to which the excellence of this performance must be attributed. Riccardo Chailly paces this symphony in long, confident strides, neither rushing for excitement nor pushing the ensemble for extra drama. Chailly's centered, calm purpose dominates the proceedings, and no extraneous effort is attempted to further the music's already impressive aims. Furthermore, a sense of expectation and genuine reverence runs through the performance, and the musicians' joy is almost palpable. The "Veni, Creator Spiritus" is perhaps the acme of Mahler's contrapuntal writing, and the choirs' staggered entrances are subtly layered to sustain interest. The mystical second part, drawn from Goethe's Faust, is treated here as an extended meditation rather than as an overblown operatic scene. The resonant sound of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's hall lends an aural halo to the music, which is glorious in the awe-inspiring passages for the offstage brass. The Concertgebouw, with eight vocal soloists, two adult choruses, and the two youth choirs, combines as an ensemble that overwhelms the listener through sincere persuasion rather than through force.
