Au cours de l’été 2002, les Clipse sont la nouvelle sensation hip hop à découvrir. Le duo de producteurs The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo) règne alors en maître sur les charts mondiaux grâce à ses collaborations avec Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake et Usher. La première signature du label de Pharrell Williams, Star Trak Entertainment, est donc suivie de près par tous les observateurs. Précédé par les singles « Grindin’ » et « When the Last Time », Lord Willin’ sera certifié disque d’or aux Etats-Unis un mois après sa sortie.
Originaire de Virginia Beach (Virginie), les Clipse profitent de ce premier album pour faire les présentations. Les rappeurs tiennent un discours gangsta rap qui fait la part belle aux fêtes, aux filles et à la drogue. Bénéficiant de productions variées, les frères Thornton se baladent entre funk (« Young Boy », « Ma, I Don’t Love Her » , « I’m Not You »), rap east coast (« Virginia », « Cot Damn »), singles pour les clubs (« Grindin’ », « When the Last Time », « Let’s Talk About It ») et bidouillages sonores (« Comedy Central »). Ce contraste, entre des productions fines et des textes radicaux, fait de Lord Willin’ un disque de gangsta rap unique en son genre.
