Il y a cette belle photo de pochette, où Miles Davis, pensif, sert involontairement de second plan à un Michel Legrand figé dans une attitude de chef européen d’orchestre symphonique, et la question qui va avec : ces deux mondes peuvent-ils se rencontrer ?
En guise de réponse, il est clair qu’on pourrait se contenter de lister l’ensemble des solistes (répartis en trois groupes distincts), et passer à autre chose. Se succèdent donc dans Legrand Jazz Ben Webster, Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans et Art Farmer. Et quatre trombonistes. Mais sans partitions, un soliste n’est qu’un redoutable technicien.
Alors, précisons que les œuvres interprétées ici sont, entre autres, de la main de Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Django Reinhardt (mutilée, la main), ou Fats Waller. Mais les plus belles pages sans arrangements dignes d’intérêt sont comme des aliments bruts. Et c’est là qu’intervient notre petit français. Il a donc assemblé chefs d’œuvre et talents autour d’une écriture mobile, passant du format d’un grand orchestre à un presque quatuor.
Tout est élégant (très), coloré (beaucoup), et développe un soupçon de sophistication, propre au vieux continent. Le regret concomitant reste que, s’il avait persisté dans cette voie plutôt que de succomber aux sirènes d’Hollywood, Michel Legrand aurait pu revendiquer une carrière dans le jazz mondial à parité avec Gil Evans. Legrand Jazz reste un très bel album de rencontres.
