Nat "King" Cole scored a Top 40 hit with "I Don't Want to Be Hurt Anymore" in the spring of 1964, and, as one did in those days, quickly went into the studio to cut an album of similar songs. The result was a thematic album treating romantic disappointment in tunes like "I Don't Want to See Tomorrow" (which became another Top 40 hit), "You're Crying on My Shoulder" and "I'm All Cried Out." The album recalled Cole's 1962 effort, Dear Lonely Hearts, and like it, suffered from a lack of strong material and arrangements (Ralph Carmichael did the charts and conducted the orchestra), with the sad sentiments undercut by relatively quick tempos and a perky backup chorus. Nevertheless, the album sold well, spending more than ten months in the charts.
