Les Saisons de Haydn en anglais ? Et pourquoi pas ! Si l’on considère que d’emblée, l’ouvrage fut publié en trois langues – allemand, français et anglais – et que le texte original qui servit au librettiste était un poème tout ce qu’il y a de plus anglais signé James Thomson, quand bien même dans la traduction allemande de Van Swieten, rien de plus normal que de donner cet impérial chef-d’œuvre en anglais. Cela dit, le texte anglais de l’édition originale de 1801 a toujours été considéré comme inchantable, car c’était là une sorte de retraduction de l’allemand vers l’anglais établie tant bien que mal par Van Swieten lui-même qui n’y connaissait pas trop grand’chose. Nombre de personnes se sont penchées sur le problème, tentant de revenir autant que faire se peut à l’original de Thomson, mais cela n’est pas chose facile sans s’en prendre à la musique. Pour cet enregistrement, le chef Paul McCreesh s’est donc attelé à la tâche et a concocté un texte réellement chantable et convaincant, qui respecte bien sûr la ligne chantée à la note près. Ses sources puisent auprès de divers poètes anglais en plus de Thomson, quelques chants populaires, ballades folkloriques etc. McCreesh est à la tête d’un superbe assemblage de divers ensembles, car la partition exige quand même un bel effectif : l’Orchestre baroque de Wrocław, le Chœur du National Forum of Music, le Gabrieli Consort et les Gabrieli Players, en plus des solistes vocaux. Avec son sens de l’architecture et de la sonorité, il nous offre là une lecture vivante, explosive, somptueuse de ce monument de joie et d’invention, dans laquelle les innombrables « peinture musicales » – les grenouilles, les criquets, les beuveries, la chasse (quelle scène fantastique !), les fileuses, le froid, la tempête, le gai laboureur sifflotant (sur le thème de la Symphonie « Surprise »…), les petits zoziaux – viennent souligner combien Haydn fut un extraordinaire visionnaire. © SM/Qobuz
