Si l'on remontait le temps et qu'on expliquait au Eric Clapton de 19 ans, celui qui venait de quitter les Yardbirds parce que leur For Your Love sonnait trop pop, qu'un jour il enregistrerait un album de Noël, il ne le croirait pas une seconde et menacerait de vous assommer à coups de guitare. C'est sûr, le Clapton de 73 ans est un autre homme. Non seulement il a surmonté bien des épreuves, mais il semble aujourd'hui serein et apaisé, goûtant enfin les joies d'une vie de famille aussi heureuse que possible. Avec de vraies fêtes autour de la cheminée, donc. Il ne faut pas aller plus loin pour comprendre qu'il a plus le droit que n'importe qui de proposer sa version des classiques White Christmas, Silent Night, ou Away in a Manger (Once in Royal David’s City), d'y ajouter des titres plus rares, comme Sentimental Moments (immortalisé en 1955 par Joan Bennett), Lonesome Christmas (de Lowell Fulson et repris depuis par B.B. King ou Joe Bonamassa) ou ce Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas interprété par Judy Garland ou Frank Sinatra, mais qui figurait aussi sur l'album de Noël des Jackson 5 (quand le petit Michael avait 12 ans). Même Chrissie Hynde l'a chantée avec les Pretenders, c'est dire…
Eric Clapton a même composé sa chanson de Noël, For Love on Christmas Day, qui est loin d'être ridicule dans ce style particulier. Elle se fond dans le décor "sapin et guirlandes" d'autant mieux que l'ensemble a été immanquablement "claptonisé", avec une haute dose de blues du meilleur goût. La seule exception, qui en étonnera plus d'un, reste ce Jingle Bells version EDM que le musicien a dédié à Avicii, dont la disparition l'a d'autant plus touché qu'il a fait le parallèle avec ses jeunes années autodestructrices.
