Le Te Deum d’Utrecht, composé en 1713 pour célébrer la paix revenue après la guerre de succession d’Espagne, marque les débuts fracassants de Haendel à Londres. Les trois œuvres présentées sur cet album par la Gächinger Cantorey sous la direction de Hans-Christoph Rademann datent d’ailleurs toutes de la même époque qui voit l’établissement définitif du compositeur allemand dans la capitale anglaise. Il prendra très vite le statut de « musicien national », multiplie les commandes officielles et s’impose tant à l’église qu’à l’opéra. Créé avec un immense succès à la cathédrale Saint-Paul de Londres, l’Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate présente une très habile synthèse des genres, rendant hommage à Purcell tout en évitant un italianisme trop voyant. Tour l’art de Handel est là qui parvient à une grande expression lyrique avec des moyens dépouillés et loin de toute ostentation. Capté lors d’un concert donné à la Liederhalle de Stuttgart, le Te Deum est précédé de la suite d’Il Pastor fido (« Le Berger fidèle »), un opéra pastoral que le compositeur avait apporté dans ses bagages. Devenu en quelques mois le compositeur de la Couronne, Handel composa une Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, première de ses nombreuses partitions officielles où éclate d’emblée son génie mélodique, juste avant la composition du spectaculaire Te Deum. © François Hudry/Qobuz
