Le Messie de Haendel en Technicolor ! Pour les inconditionnels des exécutions à la baroque, avec petit orchestre, cordes sans vibrato, voix idem, instrumentation fidèle aux autographes, nous promettons là un bel infarctus ; car Andrew Davis a totalement tourné le dos à toutes ces choses, en utilisant une édition très personnelle faisant appel aux non seulement aux ajouts de Mozart, mais même à certains réalisés par Eugene Gossens pour l’enregistrement qu’avait réalisé Beecham… Le présent album fut enregistré en concert en décembre 2015, et le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que Davis prend des risques ! Une impressionnante fanfare de cuivres en prime, des bois straussiens, des percussions (dont le marimba et les clochettes de traîneau…), des voix de grand opéra, pour un ouvrage en vérité conçu comme tel ; on pourrait tirer un parallèle avec certaines réécritures ou réorchestrations telles que les aurait aimées un Stokowski. Mais attention, la conception reste d’une immense rigueur musicale, fidèle à l’esprit de glorification si ce n’est à la lettre des autographes originaux. L’Orchestre symphonique de Toronto au grand complet, le Chœur Mendelssohn de Toronto, l’impeccable plateau de chanteurs, voilà de quoi offrir une vision radicalement nouvelle de ce chef-d’œuvre qui, on vous le garantit, ne vous laissera pas indifférents. © SM/Qobuz
