Poursuivant son long compagnonnage avec Haendel, commencé en 1996 au Festival de Glyndebourne avec une production de Theodora mise en scène par Peter Sellars, Harry Bicket et ses musiciens de The English Concert s’attaquent cette fois à l’oratorio La Resurrezione, après leur enregistrement de Rodelinda salué par la critique en 2021. Avec une équipe bien soudée de solistes excellents dans l’ensemble, Bicket nous livre une interprétation haute en couleur, avec ses rythmes accusés et ses timbres instrumentaux goûteux.
Créé en 1708 au Palazzo Bonelli (aujourd’hui Palazzo Valentini) à Rome, sous la direction de Corelli, La Resurrezione créa un mini-scandale lorsque le pape Clément XI envoya une sévère admonestation au mécène du jeune Haendel, le marquis Francesco Maria Ruspoli, pour avoir fait chanter, ô horreur, une femme (!) dans une œuvre religieuse présentée en public. La nouveauté de l’ouvrage avait sans doute échappé au pape.
À travers un livret superposant deux actions se déroulant le soir du Vendredi saint et le matin de Pâques, Haendel écrit des scènes touchantes et dramatiques pour un effectif orchestral de 40 musiciens, très important pour l’époque, et la présence de deux voix d’hommes, deux castrats et dudit soprano pourfendu par l’Église. Avec son emploi d’instruments rares et variés, le jeune compositeur allemand, sans doute ensorcelé par la lumière et les paysages italiens, donne d’emblée des couleurs violentes et chaudes à son orchestre. © François Hudry/Qobuz
