L’Amant jaloux ou Les Fausses apparences est une « comédie mêlée d’ariettes » du compositeur belgo-français André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry, créée au château de Versailles en 1778. Rien de plus normal donc que ce soit le Pinchgut Opera, basé à… euh… Sydney ??? en Australie ? Diable… encore une fois, le répertoire français ou francophone se trouve honoré, et fort bien honoré qui plus est, par une compagnie venue de très loin. Le seul enregistrement existant jusqu’ici était signé de la Radio-Télévision Belge, avec Mady Mesplé, Jules Bastin et Bruce Brewer, voici quarante ans ; Pinchgut propose donc en quelque sorte le premier enregistrement moderne, sur instruments d’époque, avec The Orchestra of the Antipodes, fort bien nommé. Élégance, esprit, et un remarquable sens de la comédie, font de cet Amant jaloux une perle absolue du répertoire français, que l’on aimerait bien entendre aussi sous nos latitudes. En attendant, cet enregistrement – réalisé en public – ravira les amateurs, et soulignera combien Mozart et Da Ponte ont pu tirer quelque enseignement de Grétry, en particulier pour leur Figaro.
