Felix Mendelssohn composed his Piano Quartet No. 2 in F minor, Op. 2, and his Piano Quartet No. 3 in B minor, Op. 3, between the ages of 14 and 15. Similar pieces by less gifted child composers might be dismissed as mere juvenilia, but because Mendelssohn was a true genius, obviously talented, and prolific enough to remind his contemporaries of the child Mozart and to attract the praise of Goethe, his youthful music holds a special fascination. Yet if the pieces are taken out of that extraordinary biographical context and examined as pure music, they are brilliant compositions that have clever ideas, subtle development, interesting tonal shifts, and surprisingly adept repartee that a Mozart or Haydn would have admired. These piano quartets stand up quite well as early Romantic chamber music, and the scarcity of recordings of these pieces is disturbing. This album by the Fauré quartet is a fine addition to the catalog, and the recording by Deutsche Grammophon gives it more prominence than smaller labels can muster for the smattering of other recordings. The group plays with a bright sound and lively, energetic exchanges, and the piano and the three strings are evenly balanced throughout. Some listeners expecting profundity in these pieces will be disappointed, but there is ample elegance and charm to make up for any perceived lack of emotional depth.
