Après trois albums sous pavillon The Marcus King Band (Soul Insight en 2015, l'éponyme The Marcus King Band en 2016 et Carolina Confessions en 2018), le prodige sudiste avance désormais sous son nom de Marcus King tout court. A seulement 23 ans, le kid de Caroline du Sud a toujours joué non masqué, orfèvre d’un blues rock bien géolocalisé et gorgé de country tendance outlaw et surtout de soul éternelle bien moite made in Atlantic/Stax. Sans surprise, cet El Dorado jongle avec les valeurs des Allman Brothers, Faces, Black Crowes, Gov't Mule, Tedeschi Trucks Band et des Rolling Stones d’Exile on Main Street. Cette fois, King se fait produire par Dan Auerbach des Black Keys, histoire de se concentrer davantage sur les compositions et leur potentiel commercial. L’esprit jam-session sans fin pour soirées bien arrosées s’éclipse au profit de titres plus resserrés. Et c’est tant mieux !
El Dorado enchaîne slows soul façon Al Green (Wildflowers & Wine), ballades plus up-tempo (One Day She’s Here) et tubes country-rock (l’efficace Too Much Whiskey, clin d’œil au Whiskey River de Willie Nelson). Marcus King a surtout la voix d’un vrai soulman habité, évoquant parfois les âges d’or du Rod Stewart des Faces ou du John Fogerty de Creedence Clearwater Revival. Enfin, pour insuffler encore plus d’Histoire à son album, King a convié le batteur Gene Chrisman et le pianiste Bobby Wood, grosses pointures de l’American Sound Studio ayant joué notamment avec Dusty Springfield et Elvis. La pedal steel du grand Paul Franklin est même de la partie… Mais sous cette avalanche d’influences, de noms, de références et de sensations vintage qui pourraient vite devenir des croix à porter, Marcus King possède une personnalité bien à lui, dont ce disque est l’ambassadeur le plus convaincant à ce jour. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
