After becoming one of the most popular rappers on audio distribution platform SoundCloud, Miami-based rapper Smokepurpp signed to Interscope imprint Alamo Records in 2017. His long-promised debut mixtape, Deadstar, dropped in late September, following several delays. By the time it was finally released, its lead singles (including the viral hit "Audi." and "To the Moon") had already racked up millions of streams. Featuring production by Ronny J, Frank Dukes, Harry Fraud, TM88, and others, the tape showcases Smokepurpp's raw, aggressive style. Deadstar features guest appearances from Chief Keef, Juicy J, Travis Scott, and frequent collaborator Lil Pump, among others. The release's cover is an homage to infamous shock rocker G.G. Allin. Following Deadstar's release, it charted in the Top 50 of the Billboard 200.
